Team Penske continued to demonstrate it’s strong pace ahead of today’s Honda Indy Toronto (3:00 p.m., CNBC), this time with Josef Newgarden leading the way in morning warm-up. Newgarden’s best lap of 1:00.0122 was nearly two tenths of a second quicker than teammate Simon Pagenaud.
A trio of Hondas followed the Penske duo, with Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay third, Rahal Letterman Lanigan’s Graham Rahal fourth, and Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon in fifth.
Of note note: Esteban Gutierrez was cleared to drive shortly before the morning warm-up. The Dale Coyne Racing driver suffered concussion-like symptoms after a qualifying crash on Saturday, and needed to be cleared by Verizon IndyCar Series medical staff before getting back behind the wheel. Gutierrez will start 21st.
