IMSA’s 50th anniversary offers ample opportunities to look back at the history of the sport. This week, Hurley Haywood reveals the origins of the Daytona Prototypes.
“Back in 2003 we started with Daytona Prototypes,” Haywood said in the above video. “Basically we drew up the concept on a cocktail napkin. I was the one who came up with the name Daytona Prototype.”
Haywood’s career vaulted in the early 1970s with victories in two of the championship’s storied events. Wins at Daytona and Sebring made him one of the most recognizable names in sports cars.
“It’s a huge honor to be with an organization for 50 years. ’71 and ’72 … ’73 is when we won Daytona and Sebring together,” Haywood said. “Winning those kind of started my career off.”
