Robert Megennis couldn’t have picked a more iconic track to score his first Indy Lights victory.
Starting on the pole and leading 28 of 30 laps, Megennis took the checkered flag in Race #1 of the Grand Prix of Indianapolis on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.
“This is insane,” the Andretti Autosport driver told NBCSN following his victory. “I can’t believe we just won that. It’s out of control. This is super special. It’s [my] first Lights win, first win in a couple of years. I couldn’t be happier.”
Andretti Autosport teammate Oliver Askew, the only other driver to lead a lap in the race, finished second. Askew briefly took the lead away from Megennis on lap 3 before being overtaken by Megennis in Turn 1 on Lap 5. Megennis would lead the rest of the race.
Rinus VeeKay finished third, with Ryan Norman and Zachary Claman completing the top five. All nine starters finished on the lead lap.
Indy Lights cars take to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway again on Saturday afternoon, with Race #2 beginning at 1:10 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Gold.
